Exercises for the elbow joint after dislocation

Dislocation of the elbow joint occurs after an unsuccessful fall. Self-medication with such damage is excluded: specialists should deal with the restoration. After the reduction of the dislocation under anesthesia and the imposition of a splint, a long time of rehabilitation begins, during which exercise therapy takes not the last place in the development of the hand.

Exercises

You need to start therapeutic physical culture immediately, a few days after the injury. Classes are performed for 20 minutes, 3-5 times a day, but over time, you can increase the load. When the plaster splint is still in place, only small exercises for the hand should be performed:

  • clenching and unclenching fingers into a fist;
  • counting game from childhood: bending the fingers alternately, starting with the thumb, and then extending from the little finger.

Once the splint has been removed, you can begin other exercises for the elbow joint after dislocation. As a warm-up, movements such as flexion and extension of the elbow, rotation of the forearm are suitable.

Joint Development Exercises:

  1. Sit sideways to the table, put the injured hand on its surface so that the armpit rests on the end of the table. Start raising and lowering your forearm.
  2. Stand straight, bend your elbows in front of your chest. Start spreading your elbows.
  3. Stand up straight, fold your hands into a “lock”. Start winding it over one shoulder, then over the other. The exercise resembles the movements of fishermen while throwing a fishing rod into a pond.
  4. Put your hand on the table, under it - a rolling pin. Move your hand back and forth as you roll the rolling pin.

Another exercise for developing the elbow joint after a dislocation is stuffing the ball on the floor (up to 500 repetitions). In addition, you can throw the ball up and catch it.

Exercises with a gymnastic stick:

  1. Take the stick at the ends, keep it in a horizontal position; legs at this time should be shoulder width apart. In this position, raise the stick above your head, then gently lower it behind your back.
  2. Raise the stick above your head, do tilts with it.
  3. Hold the stick in the middle, make rotational movements with it.

Instead of a gymnastic stick, any improvised object will do, from a rolling pin to a mop.

After some time, when the pain completely disappears when performing exercise therapy for the elbow joint after dislocation, you can move on to dumbbells: first they lift a small weight, up to 0.5 kilograms, then move on to 2 kg. At an early stage, movements similar to those made by a person exercising with a dumbbell are sometimes prescribed: flexion and extension of the arm.

During rehabilitation, it is recommended to visit the pool and perform exercises for flexion and extension of the forearm there (after 3-4 weeks after the removal of the splint). The effect of classes comes not only from joint movements, but also from low temperature, which has a positive effect on muscle tissue. In addition, in warm water in the bath, you can perform movements with the forearm - turns, flexion and extension.

Conclusion

It should be remembered that all these exercises are carried out under the supervision of a doctor - he must give permission for their implementation. Self-medication has never led to anything good. In addition to these classes, physiotherapy and massage will also be prescribed by a specialist.

Exercises should be performed carefully, without tension. If you feel pain or discomfort, stop exercising. During rehabilitation, you can not overload the injured hand: lift heavy objects, hang or lean on the hand. Otherwise, swelling and the appearance of growths are possible.
